George Washington was a slave owner from age 11 when he inherited his first ten slaves. Learn how his view of slavery changed as he aged.

Hear from Mary V. Thompson, Research Historian Emerita at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, about George Washington and how his views of slavery changed. Thompson worked at Mt. Vernon for some 40 years, is the author of numerous papers on George Washington and has written three Washington related books:

  • In the Hands of a Good Providence: Religion in the Life of George Washington,
  • A Short Biography of Martha Washington, and
  • “The Only Unavoidable Subject of Regret”: George Washington, Slavery, and the Enslaved Community at Mount Vernon.
